Victim of July Jail Transport Attack Dies

CLEARWATER, Fla. (970 WFLA/AP)- A Tampa Bay area man who was attacked by another detainee in a jail transport van in July has died.

The Pinellas county sheriff's office reports that 59-year-old Thomas Morrow died Thursday.

Morrow had been taken into protective custody for substance abuse problems, while 37-year-old Leonard Lanni had been arrested on disorderly conduct charges. Authorities say both men were drunk July 6 as they were being transported by a private company that contracts with the Sheriff's Office to the Pinellas county jail. At some point, authorities say Lanni attacked Morrow, and deputies had to pull Lanni off.

Lanni was originally charged with aggravated battery, but that charge was upgraded to second-degree attempted murder last month. Now that Morrow has died, prosecutors will decide whether to increase the charge to murder.

Lanni remains in jail.
