Teens charged in Polk school bus attack

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Winter Haven Police say two teens have been charged with felony battery after attacking a student on a school bus and knocking the student unconscious.

Police say it happened Monday, May 12 on a bus carrying students from Don E. Woods Opportunity School to Winter Haven High School.

Police say a 15-year-old student told others on the bus to get their cell phones ready to record. Then, police say that 15-year-old licked the palm of his hand and slapped the victim. The victim stood up to see who slapped them, police said, and then a 14-year-old student reached across the seat and punched the victim in the face causing him to fall and lose consciousness.

Police said the 14-year-old and 15-year old students immediately got off the bus and a bus attendant stepped in to help along with another student. Polk paramedics were able to wake him, according to police, and they said the victim did not suffer long-term effects from being knocked out.

No other students were hurt during the incident.

Police said detectives were able to identify the attackers and both were brought to the police department and charged in the attack.
