TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Mosquito season is here and there's a new mosquito-borne virus rapidly gaining a foothold in the Caribbean. Four-thousand cases have already been confirmed.
Stephanie Moody-Geissler is a viral expert at the Florida Department of Health and describes the symptoms.
“It’s very similar to dengue - high-fever, joints, muscle pain, the only thing that really can be distinguished is there is a lot of times extreme arthritic like pain in the wrists and ankles.”
There is no cure for ‘chikungunya,’ but it is rarely fatal. Pain can last for months.
Experts say the best way to avoid the illness is to avoid mosquitoes, wear protective clothing and eliminate areas where mosquitoes breed.
