Man Shot by Deputies in Seffner

SEFFNER (970 WFLA) -- Hillsborough deputies open fire and wound a man, they say was trying to use a stolen SUV to run them down.

The Sheriff's Office says detectives were trying to arrest 25-year-old Justin Bryant on auto theft charges, at the Racetrac on Martin Luther King Blvd. (SR 574) Tuesday afternoon. Bryant was parked in a stolen Lincoln Navigator, and deputies say he turned his front wheels toward  detectives and drove right at them.

One detective, 35 year old William Hyatt, dove out of the way and moved a witness to safety.  Detective Partick Saunders, an eight yesr veteran of HCSO, pushed himself away, then fired two shots. Detective Jeff Fender, an 18-year HCSO veteran, fired one shot at Bryant, who then crashed the SUV near a gas pump.

Bryant is now in stable condition at Tampa General. He's reported to be a career criminal with 46 prior felony arrests. Both detectives Fender and Saunders are on administrative leave. No deputies were injured in the incident.
