Local School Lockdown Lifted

TAMPA,Fla (970 WFLA)- UPDATE: Police Recover Gun and Lift School Lockdown

A police K9 tracked to the weapon that was near a fence the suspect jumped on 26th Street. Residue on the recently fired gun made it possible for the K9 to find the handgun. Officers have thoroughly searched the area and feel confident the suspect is no longer in the area. As a result, the lockdown on all six schools is lifted. However, officers will remain on each school campus until all children have gone home.

Officers are still working to identify the suspects. Anyone with information is urged to call the Tampa Police Department.

PREVIOUS STORY: Several Tampa schools are on lockdown as police search for an armed suspect at 26th Street and East Chelsea Street. 

There were reports of shots fired in the area of Ferrell Middle School around 3:30 p.m.

Ferrell Middle went on lockdown.  Additional schools in the area are also on lockdown.

Full lockdown:  Middleton High School Ferrel Middle School, Lomax Elementary School

Modified lockdown: Potter Elementary, Lockhart Elementary School and Young Middle School

No children will be released from the schools while the search is active.

So far, it does not appear anyone was injured.
