Dems, GOP test Fall strategy in Florida house race

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - A suburban U.S. house district in Florida has become a laboratory for the 2014 midterm elections.

It's the first test of whether democrats can counter republican attacks on the president's health care law by accusing the GOP of threatening Medicare and social security.

Democrat Alex Sink and her allies in a close race to replace the late republican Rep. Bill Young have spent millions of dollars on TV ads ahead of Tuesday's special election.

They're calling republican David Jolly an extremist who wants to privatize social security and gut Medicare.

Jolly responded with a TV spot starring his elderly mother and aunt, in which he says - quote - “protecting their social security means everything to me.”
