St. Petersburg, Fla.-(970 WFLA)-The Tampa Bay Rays have signed Delmon Young to a minor league contract. The outfielder/designated hitter is reporting to the Rays' AA Montgomery farm team.
The 27 year-old Young returns to the organization that made him the first overall pick in the June, 2003, draft. Young played for the Rays in 2006-2007, hitting .293 with 16 homers.
Young was traded to the Twins in 2007 in the deal that brought pitcher Matt Garza to Tampa Bay. Young played for the Twins from 2008 to 2011, the Detroit Tigers in 2011 and 2012 and then the Phillies this season. Young was the Most Valuable Player in last year's A.L. Championship Series with the Tigers.
Young was picked up by the Rays after the Phillies released him after he'd cleared waivers and refused an outright assignment to Triple-A.
