TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA)-Fifth Third Bank (Tampa Bay) and Derrick Brooks Charities recently concluded the first year of the "Brooks Bunch Business Bootcamp" – a financial literacy program for 10th grade students at Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School. Based on exams taken at the beginning and end of the program, the students’ knowledge of financial literacy increased by 32 percent.
"We are very encouraged with the results in the first year of the Brooks Bunch Business Bootcamp," said Brian Lamb, president and CEO of Fifth Third Bank (Tampa Bay). "The results of the assessment throughout the program clearly illustrate that we are making a positive impact in the lives of these students. The skills the students acquired during this program will help them make sound financial decisions long into the future.
The top two performing students – Arsana Wiggins and Matthew Lozada – each received a Kindle Fire.
The curriculum, designed by Dave Ramsey – personal finance expert and New York Times best-selling author – is titled "Foundations in Personal Finance." Students learned about savings, investment options, debt, budgeting, mortgages, insurance and other financial empowerment topics. A total of 22 students participated in this program and a new set of students will begin the financial literacy classes next year. Tony Sasso, membership banking officer at Fifth Third Bank (Tampa Bay), led the bi-weekly classes.
