MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (970 WFLA) -- A giant sperm whale was spotted Thursday morning near John's Pass.
The beached whale, which is about 30 to 35 feet long, was discovered by a person in the area who called Florida, Fish, and Wildlife (FWC) to come out and check on the animal.
Once a team from FWC arrived, they determined the whale was emaciated and likely wouldn't survive on its own and would need to be euthanized, according to FWC's Kevin Baxter.
Baxter said it's rare to see this kind of species in this shallow of water. They're normally found in deeper areas and only come close to shore when something is wrong.
