911 call released in Venice plane crash

VENICE, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Sarasota County deputies say a small plane crashed off Caspersen Beach in Venice Sunday.

It happened around 2:45 p.m. after the airport contacted the sheriff’s office regarding a small plane in distress that could not make it back to the airport. Deputies say the pilot was going to try to land on the beach.

Officials say the pilot of the 1972 piper cherokee and his passenger were rescued and uninjured.

A man and one of his children who were walking on the beach were apparently injured by the plane, deputies say, and that man is deceased. Deputies say the girl was transported by Bayflite to All Children's Hospital and is believed to be in critical condition.

The NTSB is enroute to investigate.
